Did you remember sitting through those terrifying grammar classes during school years? I am sure you did. I recall when my teacher asked me to memorize the function of noun, pronoun, verb, adverb and adjective. And I also remember studying how to differentiate the subject and the predicate in a sentence. Of course at that time I really have no idea how the concepts of grammar made it off the pages and from the teachers’ mouths into my brain, but they surely did. Truly speaking, I seldom intentionally paid attention during grammar class. I guess the grammar I needed to learn somehow came to be through osmosis.
Let’s think about what our society would be like without the existence of grammar. Basically, grammar is another way that allows us to communicate at the same kind of English. Sure, you and I both know what a dog or a tomato are, but what if you thought that each sentence that ended with a period was really a question. Wouldn’t that be confusing? Or what if I write something uses sentences like this: “Told him to her loving a mother being a.” Does that make sense to you? Of course not, because those words are not written in proper English grammar. If we’re lucky or probably have a good imagination then we will determine that the sentence will come up to be as such: a girl is telling a boy something about loving to be a mom. But without grammar, understanding even the most common English words isn’t that easy.
Do you enjoy surfing the internet for recent facts and news? Perhaps relaxing in front of a movie program on TV with a cup of tea? Or at least you love to sit down and read a good book? If you enjoy any of those things, then you should appreciate grammar. It is proper grammar that allows you to make sense of the internet, to understand the script of a film or even to read a book.
If you still are unsure about the importance of grammar as described above, try to have a conversation using mixed up sentences like the one I wrote above. It will be pretty hard to make it through a day when no one understands your thoughts or questions.
Fortunately, ever since we have grammar, we never need to worry about miscommunication with people because of the way of word arrangement. So be open to the grammar because it will surely make your life much easier.
